Measuring light at Dave's Airplant Corner - Part 2
In part 2 of my visit to @DavesAirPlantCorner we do some DLI (Daily Light Integral) calculations for his plants under grow lights. We also get to see his vast collection of airplants, succulents, and other plants.

Measuring Light at Dave's Air Plant Corner | Part 1
Просмотров 8718 месяцев назад
My friend Dave @DavesAirPlantCorner bought a LTH Meter from me so I figured I would deliver it personally and give a tutorial on how to measure and interpret light. In Part 1, we discuss some very important reasons why measuring light is critical to how we talk about plant care - "works for me" isn't good enough. How about growing lights? I have growing lights and when I measure the light with an app it says it's insufficient because it doesn't take in the bulb as a light source. However, my plants (peperomia and string of hearts included) are growing nicely so far under a couple of growing lights. Will a light meter take into account the light that a growing light emits?

Noooo, no darling, they naturally grow on forest floors with lots of shade, exposing them to lots of bright light is the wrost thing to do! Ideally they should be placed in shade but near good light

I had a dumb cane for 30 years that thrived and was shared with many people. It never bloomed. Can you tell me why? I have a baby now, and it will not grow. There are 5 stems less than 4 inches tall. They will begin to produce a leave, but it will wither before it opens completely. I water when dry and provide filtered light. I've had it two years. Again, what can I do?

For almost 50 years I've grown houseplants. But have always felt unsure, just trying to keep them from dying. As a teen the 70s, I bought Crockett's book on houseplants where he used the term foot candles and never completely understood. Finally! Some clear information. I really appreciate your simplistic approach to explaining lighting. Thank you.

Thanks for the video! I keep carnivorous plants and here in the sub-tropical South Africa, if you keep anything moist daily, voila! You have spores from who knows where turning into lovely ferns. Experimenting with spores is fun but you need to be patient with them - they take a lot of time to develop through all the stages. Months of care(mostly spraying or watering daily) will reward you greatly. I have a long pot with Sphagnum Moss I keep moist on a tray with water, leaving the fern leaves with spores facing down. You could keep the tray filled with water and close the top with clingwrap if you dont want to water daily or dont have time, this could stretch watering to weekly. Hope this info helps if you want to try propagating ferns through spores, or save your fern's offspring!!!

Not sure if things have changed since you made this video 3 yrs ago, but actually home gardeners/plant keepers can now get beneficial bugs against plant pests in Canada. I’m in Canada too and have bought & used beneficial predatory mites for my indoor plants & indoor gardens quite a few times now - stratiolaelaps scimitus to go in soil against fungus gnats, and amblyseius swirskii mites against thrips (at least their larval forms, with manual removal for any adult thrips). These predatory mites work very well when used correctly and may require a few repeat treatments every 2-4 weeks to fully get rid of the pests. You can buy these kinds of beneficial predatory mites/bugs from certain sellers online and you don’t necessarily have to be a commercial grower to do so - I’ve found and bought from at least a few sellers with success.

Lovely and informative video. Have you ever tried converting from soil to leca? I’ve just started recently began doing that in the last couple of months and my ferns have responded beautifully. No guessing about when to water which is a definite win with ferns.
